Two days after Hurricane Sandy barreled down on the East Coast knocking down power lines and flooding residential streets, swaths of New York area residents continue to suffer without electricity. Mass transit and running water has been crippled from the Bronx to Breezy Point. The city that never sleeps and our nation’s largest city has been eerily quiet, with no running trains, a darkened business district and neighborhoods under water. This unfortunately lethal legacy will be remembered for the homes it destroyed, the lives it took and the damage it had done but it is also a reminder that life is fleeting, impermanent and uncertain. Therefore, we must make use of every moment and nurture it with affection, tenderness, beauty, creativity and gratefulness. If any city is prepared to rebuild it is New York City. The city will do what it always has in tough times stand together, shoulder to shoulder to get the city we love back on its feet.
